Never played any Farcry. Thanks for trying to keep it spoiler free.

Fenixp: All of that was more or less there 'on purpose' tho, lead writer pretty much said that the story is utter bollocks. You can read on thoughts here. At first I thought it was bullcrap and agreed with the RPS guy, but more I think about it, the more ingenious that is.
Oh man, that interview. I appreciate that the guy is passionate, but to me it sounded like: 'It's called ROOK ISLAND! ROOK means FAKE! Isn't that GENIUS!?! Read a DICTIONARY for once, people!' Ok, we get it, you thought of a clever name. We don't collectively flip our shit over how clever it is that the Khajiit are from Elsweyr in Morrowind. Plus it's the only 'deep' example he ever brings up, even though he insists that there are hundreds of deep moments just like that.
Count me in the story-is-hokey-drivel camp. I didn't actively dislike it until the ending, but that's a discussion for a thread with spoilers. But in general, a lot of the stuff feels like it is trying to be clever, but isn't actually clever. The Alice in Wonderland quotes are a good example; they feel shoehorned in to look 'deep', but the story doesn't parallel Alice in Wonderland at all beyond the fact that both are kind of trippy.

I can appreciate that is was all by design, and I got my fair share of enjoyment out of it.
I skimmed the article - Jeffrey is clearly very excited about the game, and I can't read through all his rambling in one sitting. I caught this much out though: Jeffrey says 'it's parody! it's hokum!', but his reasoning is too loose for me to follow. He's obviously thought about the game a lot, and to me he's lost in his world of abstruse connections and hidden meanings. Ultimately, to me, it doesn't play like a parody; it plays like a shoddy story. At no point did I find myself wondering if this was satire. If the writer is the only one who can identify it as satire, is it really satire? I don't know.
Also, he says: 'The end of this story is very blatantly a subversion of any kinds of racist stereotypes.'
I just don't follow this at all..
SPOILERS
In the final fight with Vaas, I did find myself wondering if the flashing hallucinations of Vaas and Jason being the same person were put in just to be provocative and make the player 'think', without having actually any cogent reason for it. I disliked wondering that.

If you, erhm, enjoyed this interview, you have to check out some of the reactions to his GDC talk. While the idea was solid—treat gamers like method actors, give them motivations to connect them to characters the way an actor connects to a role—the execution varied between boggling and excruciating. He's a smart guy, but he also sounds like one crazy dude.

I really enjoyed it and my one complaint (other than niggles like hiding bodies) is I wish you could actually hunt.
I mean tracking animal spoor and footprints etc.. I got annoying sitting in an area trying to find Animal Type A and having to use the silly (but awesome) magic animal vision injection so find anything.
I even tried finding a hunting mod with no luck and I'm not very technically savvy.

Well.. To be fair, Cintra does literally say 'You win' at the end :D But yeah, I do like his intentions, I just don't think delivery was all that great. What I think he nailed is the 'Jason is playing the game' thing - and I do think it added to the enjoyment. I mean, didn't you find it awesome when he was screaming 'This is awesome!' while burning the fields? :D

I think those were there because Vaas was in the same position as Jason, i. e. Cintra's puppet, but then managed to free himself from that influence.

I never found myself wondering about that, but I thought it's fairly clear that storyline is written that way for a reason. Either that or writer's utter idiot - character development pointed to the contrary.

I hate the first for being an unplayable pretty tech demo with bullets going through walls and health going down like sweet milk.
I dislike the second for being depressing and boring, impressive engine though.
I.. Yet have to re-install and play the 3rd, sitting on my Uplay shelf for months. First 10 minutes were promising though!

First, I didn't like at all.
Second was fun for a few hours but I got a headache playing it so that was also rather distracting.
Third was rather fun but I barely played anything so I can't summarize the game but I think I would lose interest faster than most but it would still be a decent game, I'll restart some other time.

Didn't like it myself, got to the 'hunt boars to make purse' part of the tutorial and groaned behehe.
I don't like these adventure fps games, even Bioshock etc. They never get the shooting right, Bioshock Infinite looks like it has the same combat too :

Do make yourself a service and try to actually get to the shooting bits of Far Cry 3 then, I can assure you that when you get hold of a proper weapon, shooting feels very right :-) You haven't even encountered any enemies by that point.
edit: Well unless you just dislike the freeroaming aspect itself, in which case .. Well, why would you even buy the damn thing?

BIG ENDING SPOILERS SPOILERS DON'T PEEK SO SORRY
Yeah, I think we're close to the same opinion. At the very least, I do totally find it awesome when Jason does for sure.
My big issue is that Far Cry gives you an out in the game through the two endings, and therefore gives themselves an out. If they had mandated the 'bad' ending it would have been an insanely daring move where they basically say 'eff you, playing this game made you a monster'. But a dudebro could spend the game knifing dudes and plowing over tigers in a jeep and 'get away' guilt free, maybe watching the bad ending on Youtube later.
To me, it seems like the intention was 'Don't you like knifing dudes and running over tigers? Can you resist?' But the decision you have to make is so awful that it's very easy to balk at it (both from Jason's perspective and your own), and the narrative wasn't quite convincing enough to make the choice believable (particularly when juxtaposed with the mission immediately before). Not to mention that both games deposit you back on the island after the credits. I get that it's a convenience decision for completionists, but it does rob both endings of the impact.
I guess what I'm saying is that the endings seemed like they were trying to have the same sort of gravitas as Spec Ops, but the fact that is is a big budget game that needs to appeal to everyone means they had to compromise in a way that Spec Ops did not.
THE SPOILERS HAVE CEASED
Fenixp: I think those were there because Vaas was in the same position as Jason, i. e. Cintra's puppet, but then managed to free himself from that influence.
That is the best interpretation of that bit I've read. Very cool idea.

Just wasn't my thing, very tedious and not a lot of impact. I like free-roaming but it's gotta be done right, STALKER with the little hardcore mod was probably the best of those style of games that I have played, the game without mods is a piece of poo though.

I do believe that the biggest issue of the ending is that the writer has communicated his intent rather poorly. What he wanted to do was 'What are you willing to do to win the game?', yet as far as I am concerned, freeing the friends -was- winning the game, it was my initial objective, reason why I started doing all that. I do think that the writer should have given the player more incentive to join Citra - a much, much more gamey reason, like 'You only get the endgame achievement if you side with her' or 'You get a bunch of awesome weapons unlocked by joining her', communicated in some reasonable matter. IMO, that would be the way to put human vs player conflict properly.
