Ok so multiplayer is just like single player except up to 32 dukes/kings/counts are player controlled, you can still do whatever you want and be co-op or plot against each other. Metaserver is a bit dodgy so me and my friends use Hamachi to give us 5x player games. Any player can pause for 30 seconds before someone else can unpause.
